It’s not something many people like to admit, but ranking #1 on Google is incredibly difficult and something that the majority of businesses fail to achieve. Fortunately, there’s an easy solution and it only takes 4 minutes to implement. Here’s how you can rank #1 on Google...


Get a competitive keyword list

This is a super-quick step, but important. As we're talking about ranking for a very specific keyword that you want your website or piece of content to rank #1 for, it's crucial that you get a list of keywords related to your niche or topic. 

You can use Google Keyword Planner Tool or other paid tools (See Step 2) to find keywords related to your industry and then write out an exhaustive list with 10-20+ keywords per line. The more unique and targeted search terms you have, the better! I'd recommend starting with a couple hundred search terms. 

In addition to just finding them, try writing down why each one would be valuable for your business or what pain point each one could solve for someone else. That way when you do start creating content around these topics, you'll already have a few ideas ready to go!


Do your keyword research

Even if you've never created a website before, do your research and figure out what keywords people are using when they search for your product or service. That way, when you write your content, you'll know what terms will help get people's attention. 

If there aren't any clear popular keywords associated with your topic, try to use as many related keywords as possible without sacrificing readability. There are lots of great keyword research tools out there that can help: Ahrefs Keyword Explorer , SEMRush , and Ubersuggest are three of our favorites. Also check out Moz's Keyword Difficulty Tool . You may be surprised by how easy it is to rank well for certain phrases! 

When choosing which keywords to target, also keep in mind that more popular keywords have more competition and less organic traffic available than less competitive ones. 

If you want quick results, then look for easier-to-rank-for terms. Otherwise, look for low-competition long tail variations (e.g., online organic grocery delivery instead of organic grocery delivery online). We talk about long tail keywords in detail later on.

Write an optimized article

If you're starting with zero traffic, it can be a long road to building a successful site. It's going to take time, effort and patience. If you're smart about it, however, there are some shortcuts you can take. In particular, articles have been shown time and again to be very effective at driving targeted traffic – if they are optimized correctly! 

So... how do you make your articles as search engine friendly as possible? For example, let's say I want my post titled 'How To Rank #1 On Google In 4 Minutes' but I want people searching for 'how to rank 1', 'rank 1', 'ranking 1' etc also find my page when searching in Google.


Add visuals

If you’re going to take 4 minutes out of your day to read an article, there should be something that makes it worth your time. Adding images and graphics not only help enhance your content but also gives them context and meaning. 

Videos can also be a great addition, so if you have a few minutes of material that could work well as a video (say, an explanation of how something works), give it a try! And don’t forget audio; most blogs are now equipped with some sort of audio player so you can include podcasts or other relevant material. 

So even if visuals aren’t necessarily part of what you do for a living, feel free to add some here and see what works best for your audience! 

Before we get into everything else, let's quickly talk about why visuals should be added. It all comes down to one word: Attention. Attention is incredibly important when it comes to SEO - specifically keywords found within an image file name can boost search rankings at varying levels depending on relevance and authority level of a website/blog hosting said image. 

A study by Moz shows that having at least one image per page had 2x more visits than those without any images added


Publish and track

It may be tempting to publish your new site and start promoting it right away, but I strongly recommend against it. In my experience, it’s best to give yourself at least one month from start to finish before going live. This way you have time for code reviews, bug fixes, and user testing before you officially launch. 

After all, you want your first impression with visitors to be a good one! Launching an incomplete or buggy product is likely to discourage users from using your service again—and will definitely damage your reputation among developers. 

Your website should work correctly across multiple browsers and devices, load quickly, and provide a pleasant UX throughout. This process takes time, so make sure you factor that into your schedule. Remember: Great things come to those who wait (or take their time). 

Don't rush through it—you'll regret rushing later!

It's important to remember that there are no shortcuts when launching something new; if you're not thorough with each step of development, users are likely to find issues that could turn them off of using your product or service altogether.
